Walk To Work Day

Taking simple steps to improve your health now will help your health and wellbeing in years to come. Getting involved in National Walk to Work Day on April 3, 2020 could help put you on the right track to becoming healthier.

Walking can help to clear your mind, burn calories and get your heart pumping. Did you know that doing this before work could encourage and influence you to eat healthier throughout the day? Did you also know that walking can help to tame your sweet tooth?

Studies from the University of Exeter found that a 15 minute walk can curb cravings for chocolate and may even reduce the amount of chocolate that you eat in stressful situations!

We all know how stressful the current situation is on our nervous systems. I am sure many of us are eating for comfort right now and are expecting to come out of quarantine the size of a house!

The problem is many of us cannot walk to work. In fact, many can’t work because of the shutdown rules but we can still pay attention to our health and wellbeing.

Walking can help us so much right now. If you are not allowed outside at all, no one is stopping you from walking on the spot while listening to your favorite music or walking while watching a move.

Or even taking 10 laps around your house and garden before you sit at your computer.

If you have a garden or you are able to walk outside, there are many benefits to walking outside and feeling the grass between your toes. If nothing else it grounds you and connects your body with the electromagnetic fields from the earth.

“Earthing (also known as grounding) refers to contact with the Earth’s surface electrons by walking barefoot outside or sitting, working, or sleeping outdoors, transferring the energy from the ground into your body.”

There are other exercises you can do at home and there are now many online exercise courses you can take. I do Zumba at home on my Wii when it is raining outside. Did you know, the exercise Pilates was invented by Joseph Pilates in a prison camp?

He was a fit and active man and had exercised all his life. He knew the benefits of exercise on both the body and mind, and developed Pilates in prison and he taught it to his cellmates.

Anything you can do right now is better for you than sitting down eating too much food, drinking alcohol and not getting any exercise. Inaction is asking for health issues later on. The choice is yours. Are you choosing your health or excuses to not be healthy?

It is vital to keep a healthy body and mindset during the Coronavirus outbreak and shutdown. So, what are the health benefits of walking?

Health Benefits Of Walking

They double on walk to work day (JOKE).

  • It increases cardiovascular & pulmonary (heart & lung) fitness.
  • It reduces risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • It helps to improve management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes.
  • It helps build stronger bones and improves balance.
  • It improves your mood.
  • It helps improve digestion.
  • It helps boost your immunity.
  • It has been shown that regular walking modifies your nervous system so much that you will experience a decrease in anger and hostility.
  • It helps change your mindset (apparently walkers are more creative).

Whatever you can do right now to increase your cardiovascular activity, eat nutritious foods, calm your nervous system, calm your mind and improve your immune system is going to help you in the long term.

Get out into the sun as much as possible to get your daily dose of vitamin D. Go for a walk in nature as it has been shown to calm your nervous system. Meditate daily. This can be so helpful if we start to feel depression kicking in.

It is more vital right now as the world is shutting down that we don’t do the same. If you use this time wisely, you will come out of this looking and feeling like a tiger ready to pounce on life rather than sloth!
