Are we responsible for the illnesses we have? Does our illness reveal moral and psychological truths about ourselves that we have been trying to hide?
Think of cancer for example. We have all heard these things being said; there is a “fight” or “crusade” against cancer; cancer is the “killer” disease; people who have cancer are “cancer victims.” The disease itself becomes a metaphor.
