Living With Diabetes

There is an epidemic of diabetes in this world. I’m sure it was not as prominent 25 years ago. In fact it was not.

I remember a friend of my mum’s had it and I was astounded that someone had to stick themselves with a needle on a daily basis; now it is almost common place.

You don’t have to take my word for it. Research shows an increase in diabetes. A recent study, ‘A Global Prevalence of Diabetes’[1] shows the projection in the rise by the year 2030.

The goal of the mentioned study was to review the current incidence of diabetes and estimate it’s prevalence by 2030. Based on the study’s findings the total number of people is projected to rise from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million in 2030. This is a near doubling of the people worldwide who have been diagnosed in only 30 years!

This study shows an amazing rise of people with the disease with very scary statistics.

In addition a recent article in the Belfast Telegraph shows the annual number of diabetes-related amputations in England is now more than 7,000 a year[2].

It is a very real problem. For many not only is it a physical issue it is also an emotional rollercoaster ride.
