Essential Oils for kids

Fall is just around the corner which means it’s back to school for the kiddies! It is such an exciting time of year, new school clothes, shoes and of course all those school supplies.

Everyone seems happy and eager as you begin that first day, until the first time your child comes home with a cough or cold. Maybe you get that dreaded phone call from the teacher saying your child needs to work harder at paying attention in class.

Or maybe like my daughter, your child struggles with anxiety over going to school each day. It can be a struggle for parents to help keep your kids happy, healthy and focused throughout the school year.

Best Essential Oils for Kids

Essential oils for kids is a great way of supporting them through difficult times.

As a Bastyr trained Aromatherapist my first go to for just about any situation is essential oils. They are powerful, potent and safe to use.

Before using essential oils it’s important to note that you never want to apply them topically without a carrier oil, you can develop sensitivities to them.

I find the best and most effective way to use them, especially for mood management is through inhalation. You can do this with a cool mist diffuser or inhale them right out of the bottle.

I even wear them as a perfume with a carrier oil. So which essential oils do I use for kids? Depends on what I want to accomplish with them.

Happy Kids

Citrus oils are my go to when I want to lift the mood in a room or a car. Orange, Lemon, Lime, Bergamot, and Tangerine are a few. Nothing lifts a mood faster than the smell of citrus.

Active Kids

Need help keeping them calm? I love using one of the Chamomiles, either Roman, German or Cape. Other calming oils are Lavender, Vetiver, Melissa or Frankincense.

Anxious Kids

Keeping kids grounded and not easily irritated can be a challenge.  Tree essential oils are perfect for keeping your child grounded and emotionally stable. Frankincense, Cypress, Spruce, White Fir are a few. I also use Melissa to help with my daughter’s anxiety over school.

Distracted Kids

This seems to be one of the biggest complaints of teachers. And with the curriculum being pushed down to younger and younger kids, we are asking our kids to sit more than ever.

Sitting for 7 hours a day can be tough on anyone let alone a young child. I like to use oils that help keep the mind chatter or “Monkey Mind” at bay and help them focus.

Frankincense, Vetiver, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Clove, Wild Orange and Peppermint are great oils for focus. I diffuse Rosemary and Peppermint during homework time to help keep them focused and alert.

Sick Kids

Building your child’s immunity so that they can fight off all those viruses is the best defense against getting sick.  We know that chemical based cleaners aren’t working so what do you do?

I use a blend of essential oils that was discovered in the middle Ages by a group of grave robbers who never succumbed to the black plague.

What is it? This blend often called Thieves or Protective blend is a combination of Rosemary, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Clove, Cinnamon, and Orange essential oils. I use this in a roller bottle on my kids daily.

I diffuse it, clean with it and make a hand sanitizer out of it. I swear by it for keeping my kids healthy.

To help my kids in school I donate a diffuser and essential oils to their classrooms each year. I offer to make a cleaning spray with the protective blend and more important, I train my kids on how to use them. I want them to be happy, focused and healthy all year long.

The added benefit to this is my kid’s classmates receive the same benefits. Everyone wins!
